DUI Tidbits for July 2nd, 2010

Here’s some interesting (to say the least) DUI news for you. Maybe these individuals’  mistakes can persuade you to be safe this holiday weekend.

Scandal!… Last weekend Damon Evans, the Georgia Athletic Director, was arrested for a DUI. Now, sources are saying he was with a 28-year old female passenger… who was not his wife… or daughter.

Did you know?… Apparently, you can get a little buzz off of vanilla extract. A Tennessee woman was busted for a DUI and officers found a bunch of empty vanilla extract bottles in her car. Vanilla extract has 35 % alcohol by volume. Maybe that’s why grandma spent a lot of time in the kitchen…

Talk about a terrible night… I think I might have seen this in a Judd Apatow movie. Apparently, two buddies attended their 20th high school reunion and got plastered. One of them proceeded to urinate in the sink of the bathroom and got arrested. His friend tried to bail him out of jail, but got a DUI on the way to the police station. Yikes. Did I mention they were at their 20th high school reunion? I guarantee these two were voted “Most Likely to Succeed.”

Attention Californians!

There is a law going into effect today that requires anyone with a DUI conviction to install an ignition interlock in their car.

Did you know that over 200,000 Californians get a DUI a year? Therefore, this new law is going to affect a lot of drivers. If you have been arrested recently, this law will likely affect you, too.

An interlock is installed into the steering column of your car. It looks no bigger than a cellphone. In order to start your car, you must breathe into the interlock. If it detects alcohol on your breath, your car will not start.

If you are interested in more information, I would check out the Smart Start of California website. It has a lot of details about interlock technology and a comprehensive analysis of the new CA ignition interlock law.
