With back to school on the brain, I thought I’d talk about DUI schools in my post today. A lot of people find themselves in situations where they have to attend DUI classes in order to get their license back. Like any new situation, people may not know what to expect, and this is especially true for a one-time DUI offender who is required to attend DUI school. Therefore, here are a few facts about DUI school to give you some insight on what to expect.

First, it is important to know that DUI schools are different in every state. Some states offer online classes. The length or number of classes you need to take varies from state to state. In most states, the time you need to spend in alcohol education classes depends on your charge.

Many schools offer flexible hours and there are a few that even provide transportation. A typical class consists of learning about DUI laws and the affects of alcohol on your body. You hear stories about other victims and oftentimes a representative from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous will speak to the class.

There may be homework or a written exam, but for most places that I’ve researched, attendance is the only requirement. Also, it’s important to note that a lot of schools have a zero tolerance policy on absences. You need to fulfill every hour required or you can find yourself in deep water. (Uh, Lindsay Lohan? Hello?!)

Finally, I understand that DUI school is the last place you want to be. I just say to get it over and done with as soon as possible so you can move on from it. There have also been some cases where charges have been reduced after completion of an alcohol education class. (However, this definitely depends on the state and the specific case.)
